A Panama-flagged tanker ran aground in the Suez Canal. Because of this, the movement of water artery from north to south had to be temporarily stopped.

The tanker ran aground at 54th kilometer while the ship convoy was moving from Port Said in the direction of Suez. The canal’s management promptly organized work to remedy the situation.

How the problem was solved

The canal authority stated that it took 15 minutes to free the tanker and allow other ships to resume their journey.

It was a minor traffic problem that was resolved in less than an hour,
– a Suez Canal official said.

According to local media, the tanker is 225 meters long and 32 meters wide. It was carrying 43,000 tons of cargo.
Synopsis. The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea, providing the shortest sea connection between Asia and Europe. Its length is approximately 193 kilometers. It passes through three natural lakes.

Jam in the Suez Canal in March

  • A huge cargo ship was stuck in the Suez Canal on March 23. The container ship Ever Green (400 meters long and 59 meters wide) blocked the traffic.
  • This created a large queue of other ships which were unable to pass through the canal. The crew were not injured during the incident.
  • It was not until March 29 that traffic was restored through the Suez Canal. For this purpose, a specialized operation for elimination of consequences – SMIT Salvage Papendrecht – was deployed.
