The French Foreign Ministry says it has completely reconsidered its relations with Australia after the international submarine scandal. Paris even returned its ambassador to Canberra, but with two assignments.

This statement was made by Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian at a parliamentary hearing.

The French ambassador will return to Canberra with two missions – to help redefine the terms of our relationship with Australia in the future and to protect our interests,
– Le Drian said.

Paris has taken into account the submarine situation and stressed that this will not affect its determination to be present in the Pacific.
Specific return date unknown

The French government hopes that in time it will be possible to compensate for the damage caused by the cancellation of the agreement.
Note! It is still unknown when the French ambassador will return to Australia, because the head of the Foreign Ministry has not named a specific date.

The main thing about the massive submarine scandal

  • The US, Australia and Britain have announced the creation of a new defense alliance, AUKUS.
  • The purpose of the creation is cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • Thus Australia will get 8 submarines.
  • Canberra decided to unilaterally terminate the contract with Paris.
  • According to this agreement, France was to build 12 submarines. The contract was worth 56 billion euros.
  • Because of this, France recalled the ambassadors from Australia and the United States.
